celebrates 30th birthday

Target Marketing Communications celebrated its 30th birthday with a record year of new business wins including national brands and local businesses.

The integrated marketing/PR agency has won 14 new clients in 10 months, and recently fought off competing local agencies – in record time – to win a project to boost tourism and the retail economy in Gloucestershire following the floods, for the Cotswolds and Forest of Dean DMO.

"We're especially pleased with this win as we have such strong roots in this community," said Target chief executive Colin Spencer. "We were founded in September 1977 with local clients such as Bang & Olufsen, based in Gloucester at the time, and grew our business while working with C&G – a client for 17 years. Over three decades we've earned a reputation for working with national brands such as Powergen, Lloyds TSB, Littlewoods and Pentel, but we also take great pride in supporting businesses based in Gloucestershire."

Target was invited to pitch for the post-flood activity on September 12, pitched on the 25th, won it on the 26th and started work on the 27th. The campaign broke – ready for half term – on October 12 with a series of radio ads plus microsite www.getawaytoitall.co.uk, 4-page, full colour supplement in the Gloucestershire Echo and The Citizen, full colour ad campaign and PR activity involving the launch of Gloucestershire Tea.

The tea was sourced, blended and the packaging created, then issued to 50 cafés throughout the region plus to local, regional and national media – plus three photoshoots in the day. The response to the tea – from consumers and café owners is: "We want more!"

"Target's integrated advertising and PR team has gained great satisfaction from working with the local tourism officers, and we've had some excellent feedback from local business who have felt supported by the campaign activity," added Spencer.

Target Marketing Communications 30th year has also been a wet one with a staff member rowing from her home in Gloucester to her car to get to work. "We were very fortunate not to be badly hit by the floods," said Spencer. "But the watery theme persisted with new account wins: Impey – a company making shower and wet rooms and the Brecon Carreg and Spa brands of bottled water."

Other wins this year include: the British Equestrian Federation, Compton Buildings, Crime Concern/Positive Futures, Crown Timber, GE Money Home Lending, GCC Innova, Hazlewoods, Northern Gas Heating, OCR, Queenwood Property and SLG Beauty.

Target's existing clients include Avon Cosmetics, Ecclesiastical Insurance, E.ON Energy UK/Powergen, First Great Western, Gwent Police, NHBC, Saint-Gobain, Specsavers Opticians and Travail. "Our work for these companies covers almost every strand of marketing," said Spencer. "From advertising and direct marketing both on and offline, website design and management, brand development, design of literature and point of sale material, to media planning and buying, and public relations.

"Thirty years on, Target's continued success is down to great work by talented people and always striving to exceed our clients' expectations. We're focused on moving forward, building on our collective experience and harnessing the energy and drive of the current team."
